ARTHUR HAYWOOD leads Haywood LLC, a law firm that concentrates its practice in the representation of churches, nonprofit community development corporations, charter schools, in complex affordable housing, inner-city commercial development, housing discrimination and certain estate matters. He is General Counsel to Esperanza and a Commissioner in Cheltenham Township, PA. This work has helped to produce jobs, housing, dignity and opportunity for persons and communities that have been traditionally excluded.

Prior to establishing Haywood LLC he was a lead counsel with Lord & Haywood, P.C., a law firm that concentrated on nonprofit real estate and community development for seven years. Prior to that he was a Staff Attorney for eight years with Regional Housing Legal Services, a nonprofit law firm that specializes in nonprofit community development and affordable housing. Prior to that he was a Staff Attorney at Community Legal Services in the consumer-housing unit in North Philadelphia defending lower income families against mortgage foreclosure.

Mr. Haywood has received awards and recognition for professional and academic achievement. He has received the Equal Opportunity Award from the Montgomery County Advisory Committee of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. He has received the national attorney award in 2002 from the Christian Legal Aid Society. He was received certificates of achievement from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for Section 3 advocacy, from the John Marshall Fair Housing Institute and from several community development corporations. He received a Marshall Scholarship to attend the London School of Economics and Political Science and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Haywood has served on the board of directors on numerous nonprofit organizations including the Cheltenham Achievers Network, Center in the Park, TURN and the Richard Allen Federal Credit Union. He has provided pro bono services to numerous organizations, including the National Association of Katrina Evacuees.

He received his B.A. magna cum laude from Morehouse College in 1979, his M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1981 and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1985. Arthur Haywood is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania since 1985.

PHIL LORD, Of Counsel

PHIL LORD has concentrated his practice by representing community development corporations with local ownership in complex real estate transactions for many years. He has represented numerous community based economic development corporations in the City of Philadelphia. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in 1970 and his Juris Doctor Degree from Boston University in 1974.

Philip M. Lord became a member of the Pennsylvania Bar during November 1974. He began his legal career in 1974 by working for Northwest Tenants Organization which was a special project under the auspices of Community Legal Services (CLS) designed to organize tenant councils. In 1977, he continued to work with Community Legal Services in the public housing section of the housing unit where group representation, consumer and housing issues were his specialty. He left CLS as managing attorney of Law Center North Central to begin a private practice as a partner in the firm of Commons and Lord. In 1998 he formed Lord & Haywood, P.C. as President of the firm. While in private practice, he served for several years as co-chair of a federation of community development corporations known as CDC, Inc. an has taught numerous training classes for community development corporations staff and board members under the auspices of organizations such as The Reinvestment Fund, the Delaware Association of Community-Based Development Organizations, the Philadelphia Development Program, the Philadelphia Minority Bar Conference and others.

Phil Lord has served on the boards of Community Legal Services, Greater Germantown Housing Development Corporation, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and other civic organizations in the Philadelphia area. He currently volunteers his time by serving as an officer on the board of directors of The American Friends Service Committee and other nonprofit organizations.

He is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
